Real Madrid
survived Sergio
Ramos' first-half red
card to secure a
thumping 4-1 win
over Galatasaray at
the Santiago
Bernabeu.
The Spain defender
received his
marching orders with the score locked at 0-0
for tugging back Umut Bulut, but Carlo
Ancelotti's side soon raced into the lead
thanks to a Gareth Bale free kick.
Bulut soon leveled the scores, but Alvaro
Arbeloa put the hosts back ahead just after
the break, before goals from Angel Di Maria
and Isco left Madrid with a 4-1 win which
secures top spot in Group B.
Real was without Cristiano Ronaldo (thigh),
who was nonetheless the center of attention
as fans showed their support for the
forward's bid to be crowned Ballon d'Or
winner by displaying banners and wearing
masks of the Portuguese's face.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti also rested Xabi
Alonso, Karim Benzema and Alvaro Morata,
with Jese Rodriguez selected up front and
Casemiro handed his debut in the
competition.
Opposite number Roberto Mancini, who was
not in charge when the Turkish side was
humbled 6-1 in the reverse fixture, left Burak
Yilmaz and Wesley Sneijder on the bench.
Madrid should have taken the lead inside the
opening four minutes when Bale was sent
racing clear by Isco, but the Welshman side-
footed wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
But the momentum threatened to shift when
Ramos, who was the last man, was given his
marching orders after making the slightest of
contact with a goal-bound Bulut.
Jese had to make way in the tactical reshuffle
as Nacho was introduced, but Bale put the
10 men ahead eight minutes before halftime
with a dipping 25-yard free-kick that looked
to have deceived Eray Iscan in goal.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Umut
collected Didier Drogba's pass before coolly
slotting past Iker Casillas two minutes later.
Real went back ahead six minutes after the
restart, Di Maria swinging in a low cross from
the left to find the most unlikely of scorers in
Arbeloa, who tucked home with surprising
confidence amid suspicions of offside.
Arbeloa's spell in the spotlight did not end
there and he was booked for diving in the
55th minute, before turning provider for Di
Maria with 63 minutes gone.
Casillas produced a stunning save from
Drogba's header before Isco added the fourth
with a clever turn and finish in the box, and
there there was no way back for Mancini's
men, who must now beat Juventus in the
final group game to qualify.

Real Madrid triumph
Man United progress
Manchester
United sealed its
spot in
the Champions
League's last 16
with a convincing
5-0 win at Bayer
Leverkusen on
Wednesday.
The Premier League
champions made a bright start at the
BayArena and took a deserved lead in the
22nd minute when Wayne Rooney's cross was
converted by Antonio Valencia at the far
post.
They doubled their advantage just eight
minutes later as Rooney's free kick was
nodded in by Leverkusen defender Emir
Spahic for an own goal.
Stefan Reinartz headed onto the post after
the break for Leverkusen, but the visitors
added a third when Jonny Evans tapped
home in the 65th minute.
Chris Smalling scored a fourth with 13
minutes left, firing Rooney's lobbed ball into
an open net, before Nani scored an exquisite
late chip to consign Leverkusen to third in
Group A with one match to play.
Leverkusen forward Sidney Sam – a major
part of the club's best-ever start to a
Bundesliga season – missed out with a thigh
injury, as Reinartz and Spahic came in for the
hosts. United boss David Moyes, meanwhile,
made four changes from the side that drew
2-2 at Cardiff City on Sunday, with Shinji
Kagawa, Nani, Ryan Giggs and Phil Jones all
drafted in.
The Germans immediately sat back and
allowed their opponents to force the tempo. It
suited the English side, which quickly settled
into its stride, with Kagawa impressing.
Nani had the game's first real chance in the
16th minute when he curled over after a
clever Giggs ball, while Spahic nodded wide
at the other end.
Stefan Kiessling – the Bundesliga's top
scorer last term with 25 goals – strolled past
Rio Ferdinand for the hosts and prepared to
shoot, with only a last-ditch block from
Evans saving the day.
And from the resulting counterattack, United
scored, as a move that involved Kagawa,
Giggs and Rooney ended with the latter's ball
being turned home by Valencia.
Buoyed by its opener, United pressed again
and it had another goal on the half-hour
mark when Spahic gave Leverkusen
goalkeeper Bernd Leno no chance with a
flicked header after he had been put under
pressure by Smalling.
Leverkusen continued to lose the midfield
battle and, although Reinartz went close in
the 60th minute, heading a corner onto the
post, Spahic saw his follow up well saved by
United goalkeeper David de Gea.
Evans more or less sealed the victory five
minutes later, pouncing quickly after
Rooney's close-range effort had been parried
by Leno following a corner.
There was still time for a fourth, as Rooney
chipped the onrushing Leno and
saw Smalling convert, while only a smart
save from the Leverkusen keeper stopped
Jones getting on the scoresheet himself.
Nani's delightful chip near the end of the 90
minutes saw United finish with five goals as
they sealed its knockout spot in fine style.

Leverkusen vs man u
Bayer Leverkusen
will hope to
continue its
outstanding home
record in the
Champions League
group stages
against Manchester
United.
Sami Hyypia's men
welcome the Premier League champion to the
BayArena on Wednesday for a crucial Group
A clash, as the team targets its ninth home
win in a row in the initial stages of Europe's
premier club competition - a result that
would send it top of the pool.
With 10 wins from its first 13 matches,
Leverkusen has made its best-ever start to a
Bundesliga season but a 1-0 win over Hertha
Berlin on Saturday was overshadowed by the
injury to winger Sidney Sam.
Sam has been in electric form for club and
country this season, scoring 11 goals, but
lasted just four minutes against Hertha
before being substituted with a thigh
problem. His absence is likely to give a
chance to attacker Robbie Kruse - recently
awarded Australia's Players' Player of the
Year gong for 2013 - with the other flank set
to be manned by South Korea star Son
Heung-Min.
Leverkusen sits second in the group with
seven points from four matches and has not
lost since a 4-2 defeat at United on
matchday one. Included in the home winning
streak in the group stages are triumphs over
Real Madrid, Roma and Valencia, while the
club also came from behind to defeat Chelsea
2-1 in 2011.
However, Hyypia will be without defender
Roberto Hilbert (knee) and midfielder Stefan
Reinartz (heel).
United has won its last three Champions
League fixtures against Leverkusen, although
the English side was knocked out on away
goals by the Germans in the 2001-02
semifinals.
The team is unbeaten in its last 10 matches
in all competitions, climbing to sixth in the
Premier League after a poor start to the
season.
New manager David Moyes has finally found
his feet at Old Trafford but United was denied
on Sunday when Kim Bo-Kyung headed an
injury-time equalizer to give Cardiff City a
last-gasp 2-2 draw in South Wales.
Wayne Rooney scored twice in the previous
fixture against Leverkusen, taking his
Champions League tally to 29 goals and
cementing his place as Britain's all-time
leading scorer in the competition. He will be
hopeful of adding to that but may be without
strike partner Robin van Persie again after
the Dutchman missed the match at Cardiff
with toe and groin issues.
Midfield enforcer Marouane Fellaini is
suspended for this match following his late
red card against Real Sociedad on matchday
four but Moyes will hope that defenders
Nemanja Vidic (concussion) and Phil Jones
(groin) can return.
Michael Carrick is a certain absentee with an
Achilles injury but forward Danny Welbeck
came back from a knee problem when he
came off the bench at Cardiff.
Ten men Ajax beat Barcelona
Ten-man Ajax
ended a run of nine
straight defeats to
Spanish opposition
by
beating Barcelona
2-1 in Champions
League Group H on
Tuesday night.
Thulani Serero
opened the scoring for the hosts in the 19th
minute with a composed finish from six yards
out before Danny Hoesen extended Ajax's
lead just before the break with a neat piece of
skill inside the penalty area.
Barcelona was gifted a way back into the
game when Joel Veltman was dismissed for
bringing down Neymar inside the penalty
area and Xavi scored from the spot but the
Liga champions were unable to make the
most of their numerical advantage.
The win moves Ajax onto seven points with
one game remaining and the club's hopes of
progressing to the last 16 rest on beating AC
Milan at San Siro, while defeat for the
Blaugrana was the club's first of the season
and denied coach Gerardo Martino a share of
Pep Guardiola's club record of 21 games
unbeaten.
Frank de Boer had the luxury of being able to
name an unchanged side from Saturday's 3-0
win over Heracles and there was a further
boost as Lerin Duarte returned to the squad
as a substitute.
The visitors made four changes, with Carles
Puyol, Martin Montoya, Alex Song and Xavi
all starting for Martino's men.
Despite a confident start, Ajax was lucky to
survive a swift Barcelona counterattack in the
14th minute, as Veltman made a crucial
block to deny Cesc Fabregas.
It was all one-way traffic for the remainder of
the first half, though, and the home side got
its reward for continuing to pressurise
Barcelona at a high tempo as Serero opened
the scoring with his first Champions League
goal five minutes later.
The South Africa international ghosted into
the penalty area to meet Ricardo van Rhijn's
cross from the right and the 23-year-old
calmly side-footed the ball past Jose Manuel
Pinto.
After Lasse Schone had missed two chances,
Ajax finally doubled its lead just before the
break through Hoesen. Pinto saved well from
Viktor Fischer and Hoesen latched onto the
loose ball, lifted it past Puyol and fired into
the bottom corner.
The game was turned on its head four
minutes after the break as Van Rhijn played a
loose pass back to Veltman. Neymar pounced
but he was brought down by the defender just
inside the area.
The 21-year-old was given his marching
orders and Xavi made no mistake from the
spot to halve the deficit.
Jasper Cillessen kept the hosts in the game
with a good save from Neymar on the hour
and a resilient Ajax defence managed to hold
on for a vital win.
Don't peel of yam skin before peeling
Benin – A Dietician in the Department of
Dietetics, University of Benin Teaching Hospital,
Mr Peter Stephen, on Tuesday advised against
peeling of yam before cooking it.
Stephen said in Benin that cooking yam with
the skin reduced its sugar content.
He noted that yam and rice had high Glycemic
Index (GI) which increased blood sugar level,
and advised that yam should not be peeled
before cooking to reduce the sugar content.

Market in Bauchi. NAN Photo
GI is a numerical scale used to indicate how
fast and how high a particular food can raise
blood glucose (blood sugar) level.
“The skin of yam that is normally peeled off
contains proteins and vitamin B Complex.
“It also has soluble fibre that absorbs sugar
inside the yam.
‘’When the yam is properly cooked, you peel off
the skin before eating.
“When you cook your yam with the skin, it will
not increase the blood sugar level.
“By the time you eat the yam with vegetables, it
gives you a better result,” he said.
Stephen listed foods with low GI to include
tomatoes, soya beans and beans.
He noted that such foods had natural
substances lowered blood sugar level.
He advised people, especially diabetic patients,
to mix foods with low GI with those with high GI
in the ratio of 2:1 to maintain a good blood
sugar level.
“Rice has high GI; so, if you want to eat it, mix
it with food with low GI such as beans.
“If you take five spoons of rice, you have to take
10 spoons of beans to help to slow down the
rate sugar is absorbed in the blood.
“Even if you are not diabetic, you have to
control your sugar level because prevention is
better than cure,” the dietician advised. (NAN)
7rebel governors join apc
The seven aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party have
announced their decision to merge with the All Progressives Congress.
The governors, at the meeting they had with the leadership of the APC in
Abuja on Tuesday, said their decision was aimed at rescuing the country.
A former Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje,
announced the decision after the meeting, which was held at Kano Governor’s
Lodge in Abuja.
Among the governors at the meeting were that of Rivers (Rotimi Amaechi),
Kano(Rabiu Kwankwanso), Adamawa(Murtala Nyako), Kwara(Badulfatah
Ahmed) and Niger(Dr. Babangida Aliyu).
The governors of Jigawa and Sokoto states, Sule Lamido and Aliyu Wamakko
respectively were absent.
Baraje said the governors were part of the decision.
Some leaders of the APC like its Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi
Akande; a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and a former
Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), were in attendance.
Champions league preview;arsenal vs Marseilles
Arsenal can edge
closer to the
Champions League
knockout stage with
a victory
against Marseille on
Tuesday.
A win in France
would give Arsene
Wenger's side 12
points in Group F, but qualification with one
match remaining would still not be sealed
unless Borussia Dortmund fails to beat
Napoli.
Key to Arsenal's form has been the efforts of
Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud, with the
former having netted 11 goals in all
competitions so far this season.
Ramsey's contribution from midfield has been
crucial for a side which is still short on
firepower beyond Giroud.
The 27-year-old Frenchman netted both
goals in the 2-0 Premier League win over
Southampton on Saturday, taking his tally to
10 for the season, but the club's fans will be
hoping for a new signing in January to give
him some support.
Theo Walcott returned from an abdominal
injury in the win against Southampton and is
a welcome inclusion for a side still missing
Lukas Podolski (hamstring), Alex Oxlade-
Chamberlain and midfielder Abou Diaby (both
knee).
Arsenal won the first meeting between these
two sides in France in September, with goals
from Walcott and Ramsey giving them a 2-1
success.
They also met twice in the 2011-12
Champions League, and although the fixture
in London ended goalless, Ramsey scored a
late winner in a 1-0 victory for Arsenal in
France.
While Arsenal tops the group with nine
points, Marseille is rock-bottom and is yet to
get off the mark after losing all four of its
matches so far.
Qualification is now beyond them, but coach
Elie Baup will be looking for his side to
restore some pride.
A winless run of seven matches put serious
pressure on Baup, but successive Ligue 1
triumphs over Sochaux and Ajaccio have
lifted Marseille to fourth in the table.
Youngster Florian Thauvin scored in Friday's
3-1 win at Ajaccio, his seventh goal in six
matches for club and country.
Thauvin also netted a hat trick and provided
two assists for France's Under-21s in a 6-0
romp against Armenia earlier this month.
Marseille has won just once in its 11
Champions League visits to England, losing
six, and it will be without forward Andre
Ayew, who could miss the next two months
with a knee injury, while Rod Fanni (muscle
strain) is also sidelined.
Lucas Mendes could return from an ankle
injury though, after he was an unused
substitute at Ajaccio.
Preview;Ajax vs Barcelona
Barcelona's 20-
match unbeaten
record this season
will be tested at
Ajax in Group H of
the Champions
League on Tuesday.
The Blaugrana has
not lost a
competitive match
since manager Gerardo Martino took over,
and with three wins and one draw in their
four group matches, the Spanish champions
only need to draw in Amsterdam to secure
first place and a berth in the last 16.
Barca strolled to a 4-0 win over Liga rivals
Granada on Saturday, with first-half penalties
from Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas
setting it on its way. Alexis Sanchez and
Pedro wrapped up the points with strikes
after the break as Barca remained top of the
table.
It will be a slightly weakened side that makes
the trip to the Dutch capital, though, with
Lionel Messi (thigh) and goalkeeper Victor
Valdes (calf) ruled out for the rest of the
group stage.
Dani Alves sustained a calf injury on
international duty and missed the win over
Granada, left back Jordi Alba (hamstring)
has not played since September and
midfielder Jonathan dos Santos (knee) could
be out until April.
In addition, Isaac Cuenca has not played this
season following knee surgery, Ibrahim
Afellay is yet to return from a thigh operation
and, just to compound Barca's woes, Alexis is
suspended.
The Chilean, who has scored 11 goals in his
last 12 matches for club and country, picked
up three bookings in the group stages.
This fixture will be Barcelona's 250th in the
history of the Champions League, while a
draw would be their 100th in UEFA
competition.
Barcelona, which has a pass completion rate
of 87 percent - the best in the competition,
won the reverse fixture 4-0 at Camp Nou in
September, with Messi scoring a hat-trick.
That defeat was Ajax's joint-heaviest in the
Champions League but its spirits were
boosted by a 1-0 home win over Celtic earlier
this month that keeps its hopes of reaching
the round of 16 alive.
Ajax has four points from as many matches
and could go second if results go its way, but
it could also be eliminated if it loses and
Milan wins at Celtic.
The Eredivisie champions, who have lost their
last nine matches against Spanish
opposition, climbed to second thanks to a
3-0 home win over Heracles on Saturday.
Niklas Moisander returned from a knee injury
in that match, but Kolbeinn Sigthorsson
(ankle) and Siem de Jong (hamstring) missed
out after picking up injuries on international
duty.
Striker Bojan Krkic, who is on loan at Ajax
from Barcelona, has not played since tearing
his hamstring in September.
In osun, school principal beaten to a pulp by hoodlums
THE Osun State Police Command yesterday
prevented what could have lead to a religious
crisis between Christians and Muslims in the
sleepy town of Ejigbo in OsunState when a
secondary school principal in the town was
beaten to pulp by some hoodlums in the
town.
The hoodlums who were said to have been
hired by some Muslims in the town stormed
the BaptistHigh School, Ejigbo as early as
8.00 a.m and walked straight to the office of
the Principal, made some enquiries from the
principal before he was beaten.
It was gathered that the school authorities
had last Friday sent a female student home
for allegedly using veil (hijab) while in the
school, a situation which reportedly
generated controversies in the town, as some
Muslims were said to be angry with the
development.
Our correspondent also learnt that the
Muslim youths in the town mobilised and
moved to the school to demand an apology
from the school principal and his refusal to
grant their demand resulted to his beating.
It was learnt that dangerous weapons such
as axes, cutlasses and charms were freely
used by the irate youths on the Principal who
in the process sustained injuries.
Also, it was learnt that some teachers in the
school who attempted to rescue the principal
were seriously beaten by the mob who
descended on some members of staff of the
school.
The traditional ruler of the community, the
Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyesosin,
was said to have prevailed over the situation
and ordered the Principal and other affected
teachers to be taken to his palace for security
reason.
Until recently, the BaptistHigh School, Ejigbo
was a missionary school, but the schools
reclassification programme of the state
government affected its nomenclature as
students from other schools were merged with
those of the school.

Asuu gives conditions to ends strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) has given three conditions to be
tabled before President Goodluck
Jonathan today. If the terms are
acceptable to the Federal Government,
the union will call off the strike.
The ASUU leadership has banned its local
chapters and zonal chairmen from talking
to the media until after the session with
the President.
ASUU President Dr. Nasir Issa Fagge and
other leaders of the union were being
expected in Abuja last night.
According to a source, who was part of
the ASUU session at Mambayya House in
Kano, the conditions are:
•Commitment from the President that any
review or reconsideration or renegotiation
of the 2009 Agreement will not
substantially affect the pact which is the
cause of the ongoing strike;
•Immediate payment of all outstanding
salary arrears and allowances of varsity
teachers without victimization; and
•A written commitment from the
President that the Federal Government
will commit N225billion annually to the
funding of universities for the next four
years.
There is a fourth condition, which is said
to be “personal” to ASUU, bordering on
the need to be wary of gradual loss of
public sympathy.
The union leaders were said to have
recognised public goodwill for the strike
and the need to avert any action that
could erode such confidence.
The source said: “Our leaders are meeting
with the President on Monday to table
these conditions. Once the President
accepts these three terms, the strike will
be called off.
“In principle, members voted about 60-40
per cent to call off the strike, but they
added a caveat – that ASUU leaders
should extract a commitment (signed and
sealed) from the President.
The union is said to have insisted on the
three conditions because during talks
with the Federal Government, it was
apparent that the government wanted a
renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement.
“If ASUU had accepted to renegotiate the
entire Agreement , it means there will be
no basis for the ongoing strike. The worst
that can happen is either having the
abridged version of the 2009 Agreement
or a phased implementation of the
document,” the source added.
The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-
Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State became at the
weekend the third institution to break
ranks with the striking union.
It asked its students to return to the
campus today. Lecture are to start on
December 2, according to the Registrar,
Mr. Bamidele Olotu.
Enugu State University of Technology
(ESUT), Enugu, and the Ibrahim
Badamosi University, Lapai, in Niger
State had earlier directed the reopening
of the schools.
The registrar directed students to begin
their registration on the school portal
immediately.
AAUA Student Union President Julius
Adeniyi welcomed the resumption plan
and assured his fellow students of a
hitch-free semester.
He said: “We are dying and wasting away
our time at home; and I am backing my
Vice Chancellor on the resumption date.
We are coming in and nothing will
happen.”
Doubts surrounds attack on Dylan's car
An alleged attack on the car of the Minister of Aviation, Stella
Oduah, at Maitama, Abuja on Friday was reported to the Federal
Capital Territory Police Command on Monday.
An Escalade car belonging to the minister was reportedly
attacked by unknown gunmen at Ministers’ Hill, Abuja on Friday,
but the incident was reported to the police, three days after the
attack.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Altienne Daniel, who
confirmed the incident, said the attack on the minister’s car was
reported to the FCT Police Command on Monday, adding that
detectives who checked the vehicle retrieved a metallic object
which was being subjected to ballistic test to ascertain whether
it was a bullet or not.
“The incident was reported to us on Monday at exactly 5.45pm
and we are subjecting the metallic object we recovered from the
car to ballistic test. I can’t say whether the object is a bullet or
not, so I can’t give you any information on it for now,” she said.
It was alleged that three shots were fired at the car while the
incident happened at about 10.30pm on the fateful night.
A source, who pleaded not to be named, said, “Her (Oduah’s)
Escalade car with registration number FST914BL was shot at
but she was not in it.”
When contacted, the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media,
Mr. Joe Obi, confirmed the incident to one of our
correspondents.
He said the issue was being investigated and noted that the
minister was safe as she was not in the car at the time of the
incident.
He said, “You said you heard that the minister’s car was shot
at, right? Of course that is true and it happened last Friday at
about 10.30pm.
Ronaldo out of galatasaray match
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to miss Real
Madrid’s UEFA Champions League clash
against Galatasaray with a thigh strain.
The Portugal international limped out of
Saturday’s 5-0 victory over Almeria holding
his left leg, and underwent hospital scans on
Monday to determine the extent of the injury.
A statement from the Liga side read:
“Following imaging tests to our player
Cristiano Ronaldo at the hospital Sanitas La
Moral, a lesion in the posterior part of the left
thigh was detected.”
It is unclear how long the 28-year-old will on
the sidelines but it looks likely he will not be
involved for the visit of the Turkish
champions on Wednesday.
The loss of Ronaldo, who has scored 25 goals
in 18 Real games this season, represents a
major blow for Real, but coach Carlo Ancelotti
has an array of stars ready to take his place
Youngsters Jese Rodriguez, Alvaro Morata
and Casemiro have all made appearances in
recent weeks, with Angel di Maria and Isco
also options for the Italian.
Madrid only need a point from the game to
ensure their progression to the knockout
stages of the competition.
Angola denies ban of Islam
Angola became a hot topic in the international media over the weekend, as news outlets around
the world wrote about reports that the Southwest African nation had banned Islam and had
begun to dismantle mosques.
But an official at the Angolan Embassy in Washington, D.C., who did not want to be identified
while discussing the sensitive matter, said that there is no such ban, and that the reports are
erroneous.
“The Republic of Angola … it’s a country that does not interfere in religion,” the official said via
telephone Monday afternoon. “We have a lot of religions there. It is freedom of religion. We
have Catholic, Protestants, Baptists, Muslims and evangelical people.”
Angola 'Bans' Islam, Dismantles Mosques, Reports Say
Angola To Invest In Electricity, So As Not To End Up Like Nigeria
News of Angola’s supposed ban on Islam originated in the African press, which went so far as to
quote the nation’s president and minister of culture offering statements that suggested the
premise of the reports was accurate.
A second official at the Angolan Embassy in the U.S. reiterated that the diplomatic seat has not
been made aware of any ban on Islam in the country.
“At the moment we don’t have any information about that,” the official told IBTimes via phone
on Monday. “We’re reading about it just like you on the Internet. We don’t have any notice that
what you’re reading on the Internet is true.”
A close examination of some of the initial reports about the supposed ban and dismantling of
mosques reveals some suspect findings. One such discrepancy is that a Google Images search
shows that a photograph published by numerous news outlets this month that purportedly
depicts the minaret of an Angolan mosque being dismantled in October 2012 had been used at
least as early Jan. 23, 2008, when the Housing & Land Rights Network posted it to illustrate an
article about the destruction of Bedouin homes in Israel.
The officials at the Angolan Embassy in Washington could not attest to the veracity of the
comments attributed to officials in Angola seemingly affirming the Islam ban, which outlets
including IBTimes had referenced in initial stories on the reports published over the weekend.
Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos reportedly weighed in on the controversy, as he was
quoted in Nigeria's Osun Defender newspaper on Sunday as saying, "This is the final end of
Islamic influence in our country," according to a report by the website OnIslam.net , which was
accompanied by the suspect photo supposedly depicting the Angolan mosque’s minaret being
dismantled in October of last year.
“The president has been out of the country for a week,” the first Angolan Embassy official
mentioned above said, contending that as such he could not have made the remarks as they
were reported.
Weekly French-language Moroccan newspaper La Nouvelle Tribune published an article on
Friday sourcing "several" Angolan officials, including the minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz, who
reportedly offered the following remarks, which have been translated from French: "The process
of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.
Their mosques would be closed until further notice."
OnIslam.net reports that the African economic news agency Agence Ecofin wrote that Cruz
made the statement at an appearance last week before the 6th Commission of the National
Assembly. The website goes on to note that, "According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola
has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by
destroying mosques in the country."
The first Angolan Embassy official denied knowledge that Cruz had made such comments.
“I cannot confirm if the Minister of Culture said that. I cannot find that in our press,” the
official said.
La Nouvelle Tribune also reported that a minaret of an Angolan mosque was dismantled last
October, and that the city of Zango "has gone further by destroying the only mosque in the
city." The Embassy officials could not authenticate either of these claims.
Angola is a majority-Christian nation of about 16 million people, of whom an estimated 55
percent are Catholic, 25 percent belong to African Christian denominations, 10 percent follow
major Protestant traditions and 5 percent belong to Brazilian Evangelical churches. Only 80,000
to 90,000 Angolans are Muslim, according to the U.S. State Department .
Fg condemns New asuu demands
ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday,
condemned the new conditions which Academic
Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists must
be met before the five-month old strike could be
called off.
The three conditions were payment of four
months salaries, which accumulated during the
period of the strike; immediate implementation
of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to
public universities, starting with the release of
N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1
trillion to be spread over five years from 2014.
The union also demanded that the salary
arrears must not be paid in piecemeal.
These were some of the resolutions reached by

resolved to resume academic activities
regardless of the ASUU-FG dispute, adding that
academic activities would resume in all the
campuses of the institution from today,
Tuesday, November 26.
EBSU chapter of ASUU however, said that
lecturers would not return to classes until their
demands were met in line with the position of
its national body.
Arsene wenger back ozil ahead of Marseille clash
LONDON (AFP) – Arsenal manager Arsene
Wenger has backed record signing Mesut Ozil to
rediscover his best form after some subdued
performances in recent weeks.
Also Arsenal manager has ruled out signing
former Gunners great Thierry Henry for a third
time after the French striker began training with
the club.
Ozil hit the ground running after his £42.4
million ($66 million, 50 million euros) transfer
from Real Madrid in September, but he has
failed to hit the heights in his last few outings.
The 25-year-old playmaker put in a
disappointing performance in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss
at Manchester United prior to the international
break and then sat out Germany’s friendly
against England after contracting a virus.
However, with Arsenal on the verge of a place in
the Champions League last 16 ahead of
Tuesday’s home game with Marseille, Wenger
has backed the former Werder Bremen man to
improve.
Arsene Wenger Photo: Arsenal.com
“First of all, Ozil is a hugely talented player,”
Wenger said at his pre-match press conference
on Monday.
“He has just arrived here three months ago and
overall did not have the best of preparations for
the league. Ozil is a young player, 25 years old,
so of course there is a lot of room for
improvement for him.”
Wenger also dismissed suggestions that Arsenal
were over-reliant on Ozil’s creative talents.
“We have plenty of players who can take the
ball and play, but because he plays in the
central part of the pitch, the ball goes through
him,” the Frenchman said.
“However, we don’t put any special
responsibility on him. Maybe he feels a bit
more pressure to do that.
“But we just want the game to be played like we
see it and do not put any special responsibility
on him because everybody in our team can
deliver great balls.”
Former Marseille midfielder Mathieu Flamini is
available to play against his former club after
serving a domestic suspension, while Theo
Walcott could feature, after making his return
during Saturday’s 2-0 home win over
Southampton, following a stomach problem.
However, Yaya Sanogo (back) and Alex Oxlade-
Chamberlain and Abou Diaby (knee) remain
unavailable, and Lukas Podolski is not yet
ready to return despite resuming training
following a hamstring injury.
Arsenal will qualify if they beat Marseille — who
can no longer qualify — and the other Group F
game between Borussia Dortmund and Napoli
ends in a draw, while a Napoli win will also
send Arsenal through if they avoid defeat.
Wenger, though, says his side cannot afford to
worry about the different permutations.
“We know that tomorrow is a very big game in
that final stage of the qualifiers. We have an
opportunity to do it at home,” he said.
“You say 12 points may not be enough, it is
true, but it might as well be enough and maybe
already (to qualify) tomorrow, so let’s get the
12 points.”
Wenger rules out second Henry return
Also Arsene Wenger ruled out signing former
Gunners great Thierry Henry for a third time
after the French striker began training with the
club.
Henry, who now plays for American side the
New York Red Bulls, and 40-year-old former
midfielder Robert Pires have both been using
Arsenal’s training base north of London to
maintain their fitness levels.
Henry, Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer with
228 goals, rejoined the club for a loan spell in
January last year, but Wenger says there are no
plans to bring the 36-year-old back again.
“At the moment Thierry is invited just to
practise when he can and when he wants,”
Wenger said.
“We have a big staff, a very competent one, and
we have the right number to support the team
to achieve the targets.”
Wenger said the presence of Henry and Pires,
both members of Arsenal’s fabled ‘Invincibles’
side of 2003-04, had a positive impact on the
members of the current squad.
“They have no real target to bring something;
they just want to enjoy themselves and keep
their fitness,” said Wenger, whose side moved
four points clear in the Premier League after
beating Southampton 2-0 on Saturday.
“Usually they don’t practise with the first team
because they come in and work on fitness.
“It is a little bit less competitive but when we
have some room, we invite them to play with
us. They integrate well (with) the spirit of the
team.”
Henry’s first spell in north London from 1999 to
2007 saw him win the Premier League twice,
three FA Cups and reach the 2006 Champions
League final, where Arsenal lost 2-1 to
Barcelona.
Sokoto: mass wedding for 250 widows and widowers
Sokoto—The Sokoto State Government said on
Sunday that it would give out in a mass
wedding, 250 widows and widowers across the
state to give them a new lease of life.
Alhaji Zubairu Goronyo, the state Commissioner
for Social Development, who announced this at
the screening of the beneficiaries in Sokoto, said
that the venture would gulp N30 million.
According to him, a date will soon be fixed for
the exercise.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria,
NAN, who witnessed the screening that was
done to establish the health status of the
beneficiaries, reported that it was handled by
various committees.
Alhaji Zubairu said that beds, mattresses, sets
of chairs, curtains and two sets of female
wrappers would be given to each of the 125
brides.
He said that similarly, the grooms would be
given two sets of guinea brocade, N20,000 each
as dowry to formalise the marriage agreement,
and another N20,000 each to boost their
businesses.
The commissioner said that the state governor,
Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, and the Sultan of Sokoto,
Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, would serve as
guardians to the brides and grooms at the
ceremony.
‘The exercise is going to be on a quarterly
basis, so as to enable more potential brides and
grooms to benefit,” he said.

Angola ban Islamic studies and Muslim
According to several Angolan newspapers,
Angola has become the first country in the
world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first
measures by destroying mosques in the
country. “The process of legalization of Islam
has not been approved by the Ministry of
Justice and Human Rights, their mosques
would be closed until further notice,”
Rosa Cruz e Silva, the Angolan Minister of
Culture, was quoted by Agence Ecofin on
Friday, November 22. Silva's comments were
given during her visit last Tuesday to the 6th
Commission of the National Assembly. She
asserted that the decision was the latest is a
series of efforts to ban ‘illegal’ religious
sects.
According to the minister, the action was
necessary to fight relentlessly against the
emergence of congregations whose
worshipping is contradicting with the
customs of the Angolan culture. Same as
Islam, other faiths which were not legalized
will face closure of their houses of worship.
According to CIA Factbook, 47% of Angolans
practice indigenous beliefs, 38% Roman
Catholic and 15% Protestant.

Oreka godis take on 9ice
On Air Personality, Oreka Godis’ name may not
readily ring a bell, many but for ‘Gonga Aso’
crooner, Abolore Adegbola Akande , the one we
know as 9ice , she may turn out to be his nemesis
as she has taken him to the cleaners, calling him
a moron and an attention seeker.
The former Beat FM presenter is not happy with
the way the hip hop star treated her sister,
Victoria Godis , who incidentally, gave birth to 9ice
twin daughters.
9ice had initially denied being the father of the
twins but later recapitulated and agreed that the
kids were actually his.
In an interview recently, Toni Payne’s former
husband was asked why he denied being the father
of the kids and he answered that he had his own
reasons for his actions, justifying by saying that
he did not get to know his father until he was 22
years old.
But such would not sit well with Oreka as she
came out firing from all cylinders in support of her
sister.
She took to Twitter to bombard 9ice thus:

Abuja: reps member die during sex with female banker
This is a clear danger signal to all those big
men who are good in sleeping with their bank
account officers, in the name of "thank you
for banking with us". While I was in Abuja,
inside source showed Date360.net few ladies
in top banks who had come to "service" some
Senators in a big hotel in the city. I was
shocked!
The source said that was how they "service"
Governors and even big men in the
Presidency. It is indeed a very big mess we
have in Nigeria and now it has sent a House
of Reps member to his early grave.
Hon. Raphael Oloye Nomiye, who's
representing Ondo State in the House of Reps,
was said to be having his turn of "service"
with his female Account Officer in his
bedroom when something happened...
Top security sources said he was having a
sexual affair with a female banker in his
private residence located at Gwarinpa Estate
in Abuja when the unfortunate incident
happened.
When Daily Trust visited the deceased’s
residence at Second Avenue in Gwarinpa
Estate, neighbours said the banker, who
managed his accounts, rushed down from the
one-storey building to inform the policemen
on guard at the house that “oga just fell
down and is vomiting blood.”
They said when the policemen entered into
his room upstairs, they found him laying on
the floor with a towel tied round his waist,
while he bled from the mouth. He was then
quickly taken to a private clinic on 3rd
Avenue within the estate in his official Toyota
Camry 2012 car.
It was further learnt that doctors at clinic
declined to attend to him, saying it was a
“serious” matter, he was then rushed to the
National Hospital, Abuja, where the doctors
on duty later pronounced him dead.
Police sources disclosed that the female
banker who was "servicing" him, is now in
police custody at Gwarinpa Police Station,
Abuja.
She had denied having sexual affair with the
lawmaker before his death. But she has now
changed her story after doctors at the
National Hospital conducted an examination
on the corpse, which confirmed that the late
federal lawmaker, Hon Nomiye, had slept with
a woman shortly before his demise.
After the test result came out, the banker
(name withheld) admitted to Police
interrogators that she had actually slept with
him and had helped him to clean up,
following which he went into the bathroom,
where he suddenly fell and began to vomit
blood.
Police investigators who inspected the
lawmaker’s house had succeeded in
recovering some items, including a bottle of
water, which the deceased lawmaker had
drank from, some tissue papers and the
clothes the man had worn earlier in the day.
When Daily Trust visited the banker’s private
residence located at Kado Estate in Abuja,
two of her friends, who spoke on the
condition of anonymity, said she and Hon
Nomiye were friends.
Investigation revealed that although late
Nomiye was married, his wife and kids do not
live with him in Abuja.
Keshi against garbage for coach of the year
COACH of the reigning FIFA U-17 World
Cup champions, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets,
Manu Garba has the Super Eagles coach
Stephen Keshi to contend with as the
Nigerian Sports Award’s Coach of the Year
award ceremony holds tomorrow at the
MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos.
Pundits are divided as to who will win the
award as Keshi holds the enviable record of
winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations
(AFCON) in South Africa and qualifying
Nigeria for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil,
while Garba coached Nigeria to win the
cadet mundial for the fourth time in the
United Arab Emirates (UAE).
General Manager, Unmissable Incentives
Limited, organisers of the award ceremony,
Mr Kayode Idowu noted that the race for
the Coach of the Year award is one of the
toughest as the two coaches have been at
the peak of performance in the last one
year.
“Of all the categories of the award, I must
note that the Coach of the Year award is
one that is tightest because the two
nominated coaches have performed
excellently well with their teams winning
laurels and making Nigerians proud,” Idowu
said.
Meanwhile, Amstel Malta has partnered with
the organisers of the Nigerian Sports
Award.
Idowu stated: “The Amstel Malta support for
the Nigerian Sports Award especially
coming at the crucial stage of the award is
a welcome development and a great relief to
the company that has been bankrolling the
project since inception”.
Other awards to be contested for include
Team of the Year Award, Footballer of the
Year Award (Male), Footballer of the Year
Award (Female), Ball sports Person of the
Year Award, Special Sports Person of the

Sports Woman of the Year Award,
Administrator of the Year Award, Lifetime
Achievement in Sports Award, Sports
Journalist of the Year Award (print), Sports
Journalist of the Year Award (Electronics),

The award which was introduced last year is
open to Nigerian sportmen and women at
home and abroad to reward their excellent
performance in the outgoing year.
Emergency rule extended
After a hectic six months of battling Islamic
insurgents under a state of emergency in
Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, President
Goodluck Jonathan came back to the National
Assembly early in November 2013, to ask for a
six-month extension to enable the armed forces
complete the job.
The Senate gave its express approval, even
though a few of its members from the troubled
zone grumbled. The House of Representatives
was not so expeditious. It summoned the
Service Chiefs on November 20, 2013 to explain
in greater details before also granting the
President’s request.
The Service Chiefs made it clear that more
military resources were needed to establish the
level of stability in the areas before the
emergency rule could be called off, warning that
this might go on for a much longer period than
expected.
We are aware of the displeasure that citizens
from those areas have expressed over the
extension, particularly given the challenges it
imposes on their economic and social activities.
The emotions are also understandable, given
that the political season is coming into full
swing, and people desire the liberty to go into
the arena.
We, however, wish to point out that unless the
areas are completely secured, there will be no
room for political, social and economic
activities. Terrorists will continue to penetrate
the populace, wreak their havoc and flee. The
recent murder of a bridal train in Borno and
attack on Damaturu by Boko Haram suspects
should sound a note of warning that there can
never be half measures when it comes to the
war on terror.
It is evident that the armed forces have made
great progress, driving the terrorists away from
the big cities into the forests with the support
of the general populace. In fact, the valiant
vigilance groups known as the Civilian JTF have
helped into no small measure in driving the
anarchists to the fringes, from where they now
make desperate and uncoordinated attempts
proving they still exist.
The only way a return to sustainable normalcy
can take place is for the armed forces and the
local population to redouble their efforts and
get the job finished in quicker time.
Meanwhile, we call on government at all levels
to consider some relief packages for those
hardest hit by the conflict, especially the
displaced persons and those needing food,
medicine and clothes. The war on terror is a
war. Wars breed human suffering, and efforts
are made to reduce it through relief efforts.
The armed forces of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria are mandated by the Constitution to
secure the nation from internal and external
threats. The President has sworn an oath to
implement this constitutional provision. It is
mandatory for the people to cooperate and
ensure that this sacred national mission is
accomplished.
FG, ASUU both losers in ongoing strike – Aremu
ILORIN— The Vice President of Nigeria Labour
Congress, NLC, Comrade Issa Aremu yesterday
in Ilorin, Kwara State said both the Federal
Government and striking members of Academic
Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, were both
losers in the ongoing over four months old
industrial action embarked upon by the
university lecturers.
Aremu who is also the General Secretary of
National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring
Workers of Nigeria, NUTGTWN, regretted that
the death of the former ASUU leader, Professor
Festus Iyayi had caused major setback in the
Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC’s intervention in
resolving the face -off between ASUU and
federal government.
Aremu spoke with journalists in Ilorin at the
fidau for the late wife of the pioneer Chairman,
Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related
Offence Commission (ICPC ), Hajia Akanbi.
He pointed out that Nigeria cannot be among
the top economies of the world with her
universities shut for over four months.
According to him,“We are all losers and the
lessons from this is that government should
learn to keep and respect agreement reached
collectively .We can’t be part of the leading
counties of the world when we shut Universities
for four months,”
He extolled the virtues of the of the late
Akanbi’s wife, describing the deceased’s demise
“as a loss of a comrade mother” whom he said’
was very passionate about Nigerians and the
state of the Nigerian nation”.
He said though the late jurist wife “was
anonymous” in her struggle, the union
recognized her silent roles and the supports she
gave to her husband who according to him, is a
friend of the labour’.’
He added that for every respected jurist like the
former chairman of ICPC to maintain his
national honours and respect till date, the late
wife also played a vital role.

Fulham vs Manchester United – United’s Starting XI?
Saturday will see the Red Devils make their
way to Craven Cottage in what is a very hard
to predict game. Fulham have started the
season with somewhat mixed performances
and will hope to hope to cause the
occasionally faltering Manchester United
problems. David Moyes on the hand is hoping
to build on what is now three successive wins,
“We were a little but up and down at the start
of the season – winning one, losing one – so
we are hoping to get more consistency and for
form follows that. ” With momentum gathering
from wins against Sociedad, Stoke and then
Norwich during the week it would appear that
United may be finding their winning form
again.
Moyes will likely make huge changes from the
midweek Capital One cup match
againstNorwich, David De Gea should return to
the side along with Patrice Evra. Rafael
should retain his position from the Norwich
game, Smalling and Valencia have both been
favoured recently but with
Rafael growing ever stronger and more
impressive after his return from injury he
should get the nod on Saturday. The centre of
the defence has seen the starting spots
passed around like a game of hot potato in
the past few weeks with Evans, Jones,
Smalling, Vidic and Ferdinand all having
started. Ferdinand and Vidic return to action
during the week and performed well, albeit
under little pressure from Norwich. I would
hope that Moyes will persist with the
partnership of Evans and Jones in the centre
of defence however as he attempts to develop
a new centre back partnership that can be
relied upon in the coming years.
On Tuesday night the United central midfield
consisted of Cleverley and Jones but with this
being a league match I would expect the
return of the Michael Carrick to the team.
Moyes has said, “Michael Carrick has got a bit
of a problem with his calf and Achilles. But we
don’t think he’s too bad.” If Carrick can play
through this then he probably will as Moyes
hopes to keep the momentum going, if on the
other hand he can’t play then it leaves the
manager with a big problem. Fellaini should
make a return to the starting lineup after
being absent since the 1-1 draw with
Southampton. Cleverley, Giggs and Kagawa
are all in contention but it would seem
unlikely that any will force a fit Fellaini or
Carrick out of the starting eleven.
I hope the right side of the midfield sees the
return of Nani, his performance last weekend
against Stoke received an ovation of boos as
the winger left the field but it is worth
remembering that it was his cross that
provided Rooney with the header that resulted
in the Robin Van Persie goal. It is also worth
remembering that Nani has always been a
player that frustrates fans to no end but has
the ability to perform something amazing and
score a goal out of nothing. His performances
need to improve if he is to hold onto a
starting position but with the options
available to Moyes at the minute on the right
of midfield it seems harsh to brandish Nani
“not good enough”. The left side of the United
midfield could see Kagawa, Young or Januzaj
get a start. After another strong performance
from Januzaj against Norwich this could be
another great opportunity for the young
midfielder to highlight his potential to the
footballing public. My guess is that he may be
rested for this game and we could see Kagawa
return to the team, the creative midfielder has
produced improving performances in recent
weeks and seems to have firmly put himself in
the managers mind. He is still far from the
player that signed for United from Dortmund
two years ago but is much improved from his
early season performances. Young worked
hard on Tuesday night to stake a claim on the
starting position but with consistently dismal
crosses from promising positions I can’t see
Moyes taking a punt on Ashley.
Chicharito has been in great form scoring
three goals in two games but is likely to still
be on the bench on Saturday. This is
something that will always be the case when
the other two striking options are Van Persie
and Rooney. Both scored last weekend against
Stoke and with Rooney in such an amazing
form it really would be strange to see anyone
other than the two United powerhouses start.
Predicted Manchester United XI:
De Gea
Rafael Jones Evans Evra
Nani Carrick Fellaini Kagawa
Rooney
Van Persie
A fourth win on the trot will go a long way to
silencing the #MoyesOut brigade and should
help United climb further up the league and
closer to the summit of the Premier League.
What would be your starting XI against
Fulham? Comment in the section below.
